At a time when masks have become a necessity for epidemic prevention and control, the industry which produces on-woven fabrics is facing a huge challenge.
"Since the first two months, the government has ordered 1 million non-woven fabric face masks every day, and has exhausted all the non-woven fabrics in stock." A staff member of a large domestic diaper manufacturer in the Yangtze River Delta region said, "The price of non-woven fabrics has increased. Some small diaper manufacturers have no inventory and no production."
"The price of non-woven fabrics has increased by 10 times. Our industry, like the diaper industry, is facing resumption and suspension of production." Chen Hua, head of foreign trade packaging enterprise of a company in Shanghai, told a reporter from China Business News.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the production of basic raw materials and new products in China maintained growth in the first quarter, of which the output of non-woven fabrics increased by 6.1%.
"The leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government have just visited our company, and I have already reflected them the problems we are facing." Chen Hua's company is a non-woven packaging export company, which ranks among the top 10 companies in the same industry in the country. Unable to withstand high raw material prices, 70% of production capacity was closed again.
"The price per ton of non-woven fabric, the core raw material we use, has risen from 12,000 yuan to 120,000 yuan." Chen Hua said.
Chen Hua's factories are in Jiaxing and Yiwu. Starting from the holiday of nearly 1,000 workers on January 10, the factory has been suspended for more than three months. With the call to resume work, production capacity has been restored to half.
He was relieved originally. "The epidemic has damaged companies by 50%, and we can take a breather. Now that the price of raw materials has soared, we have now suffered 70% damage." Chen Hua said.
Where are all the non-woven fabrics on the market? "A large number of non-woven fabrics are supplied to companies." Chen Hua said.
Due to the mass production of masks on the production line, the staff said: “there is no way to order diapers, and no orders for diapers are accepted.” What follows is the price of diapers. "Because of rising costs, the price of diapers will increase by 40%." The staff member said, "We are a relatively good company. Many small and medium diaper factories have stopped production and there are no diapers in stock."
The price increase is more for melt blown non-woven fabrics. Melt-blown non-woven fabric is an important component of sms medical fabric and an important material for the production of medical surgical masks. Before the Spring Festival, the melt blown non-woven fabrics price was around 20,000 yuan per ton, but Chen Hua said: "Now the price of melt blown fabrics is approaching 600,000 yuan/ton."
Even so, downstream companies bear high costs, and no company will receive orders for non-woven fabrics. This means that production of non woven fabric is basically replaced by production masks.
"When the price of non-woven fabrics rises to 30,000 yuan/ton, there is no way to place orders." Chen Hua revealed to reporters that he had inquired about orders from many factories.
This kind of capacity is packaged, "a package is one month, and the order is full for one month." Chen Hua said: "I can feel that there are people hoarding a lot of goods in the market."
"The non-woven fabrics we ordered are used on the inner lining of packaging products. I have visited these factories. The quality of the products is average, and they do not have the conditions to produce medical non-woven fabrics. They have neither qualifications nor equipment capabilities. "This puzzled Chen Hua. Some non-woven factory personnel directly told Chen Hua: "We will not accept orders for two to three months."
Because the price of masks continues to increase, many businesses want to enter the non-woven fabric industry to get a share of the pie. As a result, the price of non woven fabric manufacturing machine and melt blown non woven machine has been rising. And these short-term companies may not meet the quality standards.
On April 16, Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, where melt blown cloth manufacturers gather, rectified the industry, raising the industry threshold. Analysis agencies believe that the short-term melt blown cloth price is expected to be at a high level.
For downstream non-woven fabric enterprises, "the supply chain is all broken, and it is in a state of shutdown." Chen Hua is looking for other fabrics to replace non-woven fabrics. The already sluggish overseas demand has shrunk further.
