Affected by the new coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, the demand for anti-epidemic materials such as masks and protective clothing has greatly increased. In particular, the price of masks has reached a peak. As the core material of masks, non-woven fabric price has naturally risen, and prices have soared. Under such circumstances, industries that use non-woven fabrics as one of the materials, such as diapers, wet wipes, and home furnishing industries including mattresses, wallpaper, etc., have been affected to a certain extent.

1. The supply of non-woven fabrics is extremely short

Non-woven fabric is composed of oriented or random fibers. It is called cloth due to its appearance and certain properties. The non-woven fabric production processes include spunbond, melt blown and spunlace non-woven fabric.

Melt blown non-woven fabric has risen by more than 30 times in 2 months, spunbond non-woven fabric has risen by more than 10 times, and hot air non-woven fabric has also risen by 8 times.

According to reports, before the epidemic, melt blown non-woven fabrics price was around 20,000 yuan per ton. In February 2020, the price soared to 80,000/ton. In March, the price of melt blown non-woven fabric exceeded 500,000/ton. In April, the international epidemic broke out and melt-blown non-woven fabrics ushered in the second round of price increases.

Medical non-woven fabric is an important material for the production of medical surgical masks. Before the Spring Festival, the price of melt-blown non-woven fabrics was around 20,000 yuan per ton. An employee of a diaper factory said that the price of melt-blown fabrics is now approaching 600,000 yuan per ton.

At present, a large number of non-woven fabrics in China are supplied to mask factories, and the masks are exported to the world, resulting in an extreme shortage of domestic non-woven fabric production capacity. Affected by soaring demand and excessive speculation, industries that use non-woven fabrics as raw materials are also affected. Household products such as mattresses and wall coverings are one of them.

2. The Impact of the Home Furnishing Industry

The price of non-woven fabrics has skyrocketed, and the most affected is the diaper and wet wipe industries. According to reports, about half of the diaper factories have stopped production or are about to stop production.

Will the shortage of non-woven fabrics affect the home furnishing industry? Practitioners in the home furnishing industry said that the impact on bedding is quite obvious. On the one hand, the independent pocket springs used in the mattresses are basically non-woven fabric bags. On the other hand, the dust bags and handbags for pillows are also made of non-woven fabrics.

Compared with the previous year, non-woven fabric price has increased by about 300%. Of course, the biggest problem is not the price, but the fact that it is difficult to get the raw materials. The raw materials are basically occupied by masks. At present, most companies can only rely on the inventory to maintain production.

When talking about the impact of non-woven fabrics on the home furnishing industry, practitioners said that in fact, the production cost fluctuates little. Although the purchase price of non-woven fabrics has risen, other materials have declined due to weak market sales, and the company has reduced consumption of non-woven fabrics and the use of other raw materials to temporarily replace it.

Regarding the wallpaper industry, practitioners say that medical non-woven fabrics and non-woven fabrics for wallpaper have a large difference in raw materials, so at present, they have not felt the impact of the supply of non-woven fabrics on the wallpaper industry. Therefore, due to replaceability or differences in raw materials, the home furnishing industry is less affected by non-woven fabrics, and it is not as destructive as the diaper industry.

3. The Price of Non-woven Fabrics Is Returning to Normal under Policy Control

The soaring price and scarcity of raw materials such as polypropylene are one of the main reasons for the scarcity of non-woven fabrics. However, as the relevant departments vigorously rectify the manufacturers of inferior masks, the industry has spread the popularization of polypropylene materials for masks, and the polypropylene market has gradually returned to normal.

The price and quality of masks have attracted the attention of regulatory authorities. The staff of the Device Supervision Department of the State Drug Administration said that the State Drug Administration will strengthen the supervision and inspection of key links such as raw material procurement, production process control, and product release from non-woven fabric manufacturers, and urge companies to organize production in strict accordance with legal requirements and standards.

Now the price of polypropylene drawing has begun to decline, it may be a signal that the market has returned to normal. As the price of raw materials cools, perhaps the non-woven fabrics price will soon fall. And the price of non-woven fabric maskswill fall. However, it is estimated that the foreign epidemic situation is completely stabilized so that the price of non-woven fabrics is to return to the level before the epidemic.
